Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

I'm trying to decide if it this scenario is the green or the blue. I tried to shortcut things, and just went full send with a crush sleeve, locktite, etc. I assumed that since I was just changing the two pinion bearing and races I'd be fine. Now I need to pull it apart. I'll try moving...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

Things were going good today for a while, I had my backlash dialed into 10,000s and everything looked good. I decided to run a pattern before I buttoned everything up. From what I gather this is a pretty bad pattern. I applied way too much of the paint but the drive side looks pretty bad. I'm...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

Here's another question. This washer was behind the pinion seal and in front of the outer bearing. Is this the oil Slinger? My master rebuild kit does not seem to have a replacement for this. I bent it up when trying to pry out the seal and bearing. Do you guys think I should reuse this one...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

Let me know if I'm making a mistake, but my plan is to put it together with new pinion bearings and races and run my factory gears. I have a new set of motive gears that I got for $200 that I can use, but it looks like I'd be fine to run the factory stuff. Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

The inner and outer bearings and races don't look much better Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

Okay got the opinion out. It didn't take much effort for my impact to pull off that pinion nut. To my untrained eye, the pinion gear itself looks good but the bearing and races looks cooked Sent from my Pixel 7 using Tapatalk

Carrier is out. The pinion is way loose. I can move it in and out with my hand.

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

I'm trying my hand at taking these readings. Feels like more of an art than a science. Having said that, my backlash appears to be at 25 while the spec says it should be between 8 and 12. I wasn't able to get a good reading on the pinion preload as it would spin freely without any real...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

That is exactly what I'm experiencing! Sound on acceleration, but nothing when coasting. The last of my parts arrive today, and I'm going to tear into it. The only problem is that it just hit 21 degrees outside, and my garage is too small to work in. Hopefully it warms up soon.

I think the forum software screwed up again, and that link doesn't work. :(

    Upgrade to my TJ Jack

It's always been frustrating to use my Jeep TJ's spare jack because of the weird long bars that it used to raise and lower the jack. I ended up grinding down a half inch extension and now it fits perfectly in the hole. I can use a standard socket wrench to raise and lower the the Jeep. Much...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

No slop in the control arms - one was loose, but I tightened it up. There isn't much movement straight in and out, requires a twist. No leaks that I've seen. I'll pull the shafts and try and read the backlash with my new amazon beam torque wrench

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

I'm trying to think it through while watching all the videos I can on youtube. My guess is that to set the backlash I need to pull the carrier, as having the carrier / axles / tires all in place would make getting a reading impossible. To answer your question, I believe it is 0.008 to 0.012...

Is this pinion as bad as I think it is?

I've been having a whine from my jeep on the highway. When on the gas it would scream when I got up to 50+. I had originally thought it was my transmission, but no, it's the Ford 8.8 rear end. Pulling the rear driveshaft and driving around and it's whisper quiet (well .. a TJ whisper). So, I...

    transmission linkage bushing

Are you talking about the white end on this cable: Looks similar to the one on my TJ. I had a hard time getting mine on as well. Can't say that I found a trick to do it. I remember struggling with it until I finally squeezed it on. Maybe something like this may help...

    New jeep followed me home

Maybe some spray electronics cleaner to try and get the pins shined up a bit? I'd try cleaning and wiggling the wires before I tried replacing the cluster.

Getting wiring away from right Header

Yeah, it's cheap enough that if it doesn't stay stuck you're not out too much.

Getting wiring away from right Header

Are you looking for some sort of structure to attach it to (hence the coat hanger)? I don't know how well they'd hold, but you could try something like this https://www.amazon.com/Adhesive-Management-Adjustable-Organizer-Fixation/dp/B0881DWXPL/?th=1 or this one accepts zip ties...

Do I have a bad torque converter?

Did you use loctite on the bell housing bolts? I've put loctite on the flywheel to torque converter bolts, and all the driveshaft bolts, but I didn't see any on the four bell housing bolts (so I didn't add any). I'm in the final bits of this, but if I need to go back and add loctite, now's the...
