I have a 95 Cherokee, bare bones, 5spd manual transmission,4wd, 2.5liter engine, 156,000 on the truck(should I say station wagon?). I just bought it a couple of days ago, clean clean truck, level on the springs, no rust, little ruff when the engine steps down intialy from the fast ideal when you start it, but it pulls strong.

When I go to put it into reverse, clutch all the way to the floor, it grinds the gears almost every time. Than I thought I started noticing when I put it into first a very slight clunk from the ass end of the truck (no movement from the truck gong into reverse or first gear). Now like lets say three days later after this started happening, it stopped grinding into reverse but the slight clung from rear of the truck is still there. I believe this vehicle has a hydrolic clutch on it ( I would assume self adjusting) so anyone have any idea what this could be?

I am embarssed to say I know nothing about this vehicle, still waiting on the Chilton's manual from amazon, only drive line fluids I have checked was the rear pumpkin, mind you this truck shifts like butter into all the gears, slight spool up from the synchros in first sometimes when you shift down into but no big deal, any insight into this grinding and clunking would be great, THANKS

Kevin

P.S why the hell don't they put tachs in these things, not that I need it but it sure would be nice.

Your transmission is an AX15 with an external clutch slave. The AX15 is prone to having bad synchronizers due to Chrysler recommending the wrong fluid, GL5 rated gear oil. The high sulfer content of GL5 is very corrosive to the soft brass synchronizers in the AX5 and AX15 transmissions. Drain the fluid and chances are you'll see brass glitter.

Sounds like it is not too late to save your transmission, I'd recommend changing the fluid and putting in a quality synthetic like Redline MT90. It'll shift smooth even in the coldest of weather.
