1st Gear problem

Hi,

My 1988 Cherokee is having problems going in to first gear (Manual trans.). I just had the clutch & throw out bearing replaced. About 4 days later I started having problems putting it in 1st. It intermittenly won't go into 1st gear. If I try several times and/or allow the Jeep to roll slightly it will go in (it's not synchronizing?). Could the problem have been created during the clutch replacement? What would correct this problem? Thanks for any help.

Never having messed with a stick shift XJ, I might be speaking from a position of ognorance. But guessing it´s about the same as the YJ, I´d say you have some air in the hydrolic clutch assmebly.[addsig]

How would you bleed that out, I ironically had a clutch put in over the weekend and am having a similar problem and If you read my post in the YJ section "Caution unqualified tech's" you would see why I am not going back there!? :-? [addsig]

Wouldn't air in the clutch line effect all gears? The only gear with the problem is 1st, and i physically can't push the shifter into the 1st position unless:

A) the jeep is slightly moving
B) I pull my foot of the brake
C) I try several times

The shop that did the clutch work said the transmission had a blend of fluids in it (probably my former mechanic's work :-x). They changed the fluid and put the proper gear oil (75W-90) in it. Also the transmission mount is sagging, would that have any effect on 1st gear? Any other ideas?

Thanks for the help

does it work if you try double clutching it? (when you have it in neutral, let the clutch out, then put the clutch back in and then put it in gear)... unless it has something to do with the linkage, its gotta be the syncro if all the other gears work.

how does reverse work? okay?[addsig]

I don't think double pressing the clutch will make it work (but will try). I had the clutch replaced because in reverse there was significant clutch chatter (Jeep would lurch). Reverse works fine now.

Thanks

The reason I mentioned the air thing, is because my old YJ had a slight leak and if I let the fluid get a little to low and sucked a bit of air, from bouncing around. First gear shift would be a little sticky and would try to grind a touch. The rest of the gears would follow suit, bye and bye, if I failed to add a little DOT 3, it got progressively worse, the more air that got in there. I had the internal slave cylinder, with a bleeder tap sticking out of the bell housing.
Another YJ owner on a previous post mentined that he had trouble shifting into first after a clutch change and bleeding the system cured the problem.
Could be something else, but heck check the easy stuff first.[addsig]
