That 31 mpg benchmark is attached to the new Cherokee's base engine, a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The EPA also announced fuel-economy figures for the other two-wheel-drive version: the 271-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 will get an estimated 19/28/22 mpg. Both engines pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission. The EPA in August reported figures for the four-wheel-drive versions of the Cherokee: 21/28/24 mpg for the four-cylinder version and 19/27/22 mpg for the V-6. All versions improve on the outgoing Liberty's best fuel-economy figures of 16/22 mpg city/highway.
