4x4 will not engage

Hi< I have a 95 jeep wrangler and the 4x4 shifter is loose and doesn't engage. The indicator light does not come on and I can drive normally in regular gear. I hear no noise when I drive. Any suggestions??

The linkage might be loose or disconnected.

Check under the jeep for what part of the shifter linkage is loose. You can shift it manually underneath if necessary.

The 4wd light is activated by the front axle disconnect. Follow two black vacuum lines along the passenger frame rail to the front axle and you'll find the axle disconnect. You're losing vacuum or the vacuum switch on the transfer case is bad.
