Came across an 86 Cherokee{Pioneer} 2.8 v6 engine,5spd standerd transmission, good tires, body is solid needs painted. The guy says he'll take 650 dollars for it,says it runs and has a new clutch. Would there be a power issue on the highway with it,and towing a camper. Thanks.

Towing, yes. Normal driving, no but you can put a Chevy 3.8 from a camaro or a 4.3, if I remember right in place of it

3.8 will go in pretty easily, 4.3 takes some work. It also has the BA-10 trans that isn't know for it's strength and longivity.

but, that was the big engine for that and the previous two years, i think. so its cool in its own right.

I think the 2.8 made less power and torque than the 2.5 four banger in the later years. And most of them came with a rod out the block from the factory.

What do you mean by later years? What do you mean by rod out the block from the factory? Is this Cherokee worth messing with?

not really, other then the fact that they are not to common because they were such a short run engine.

They weren't the most reliable vehicle on the years. The 2.5 l four cylinder made more power and torque than the 2.8 did. Also the engine bay is alot smaller leaving the possibility for a decent engine swap out of the picture. There's a few 2.8 with decent mileage but most were replaced at very low mileages.

The 2.8 was a dog of a motor, rated at 95 hp and 120 ft-tq I believe. I would have to look it up.

but yes, a 3.8 from a f body will slide right in there. even better, you can look for a sc3800 from a GTP grand prix or one of many buicks and have a real screamer.
