89 YJ need Dana 35 housing

It's an 89 YJ. I have no reason to believe that the Dana 35 is not the original...but it was a total loss rebuild, so anything is possible.

In any case, I grenaded the rear end. Not having the financial ability to swap out the axle for anything that needed mods, I bought rebuild kits for both this Dana 35 and the front Dana 30. I am gearing it to 4.56.

All that said, we found a warped housing for the Dana 35 when we got in there. I just need a new housing. I don't even know if the housing is different between the C-Clip and non C-clip...but assuming what I have is stock...I must just assume my 89 is non c-clip.

Anyway, I have to have a housing for it, and I am finding that the housing is surprisingly hard to find. ONE local guy had one...and wanted $750.00 for it. Naturally, I told him to pack sand.

Can anyone help me find one, at a decent price?

wow, that is crazy, 750? hit the ft bragg and camp lejuene areas and i bet there are some laying around. maybe check military jeepers . com or something like that for people trying to get rid of one for cheap or free

Oh, I know. I have a pro doing the work, and he called me to tell me about the $750.00 offer. I said "You tell him to..." and my guy cut me off...'I already did, don't worry."

It's not even a "part" really...it's the empty shell that the parts go inside!

OK, the Jax and Fayettenam ideas were solid. There were several on Craigs List. Better yet, I am heading down to the beach this weekend anyway, so it isn't much of a side trip.

Now, allow me to show my ignorance. Is there any difference in this housing between the C-clip and non C-clip Dana 35s? Am I getting the right part, so long as I get one off of a YJ...or do I need to look for anything?

Stick with pre'91 non c-clip as they have the flanges on the ends to bolt the axleshafts to.

glad you got everything. i know my bro and sis live in jacksonville area and when my brother had his 91 wrangler, parts were easily available around there

Yes, there was alot of stuff down there. Fabulous tip.

But as I continued to peruse Craigs List's all over...you won't believe this:

A brand new ad popped up in Greensboro. I was looking for a new housing, to build inside. I had a master rebuild kit with 4.56 gearing. I had already finished gearing the front to 4.56...so I was just looking for a housing to put my back gears into.

The brand new ad...was a guy who was parting out an 89 YJ (mine is exactly that...an 89 YJ), and he wanted to sell...a full Dana 35 axle, with 10,000 miles on an already built 4.56!

I almost fell out of my chair. Talked him down from $275.00 to $225.00, picked it up this afternoon and dropped it off with my mechanic. Now I am selling the rebuild kit I had on ebay. Buy it Now price is (go figure) $225.00...LOL.

My guys were dropping the old axle before I left the shop this afternoon.

Better still...the mechanic came up to me and said "you have to see this." He took me to the DANA 30 up front and showed me FRESH silicone around the cover. I just laughed and said "no way."

Sure enough...the 3.07 gears that came out of the front one...were brand spanking new! So those are up for sale on ebay too...LOL!!

It was a good day!
