97 Jeep TJ Sport :: Electrical Problem!

Hi! All,

Today i installed a new battery in my 97 TJ and when i plugged in the new battery the alternator started smoking! The jeep was turned off. When i unplugged the battery the alternator was getting hot.

I decided to put the old dead battery back in and jumstart the sucker, but all i get is a blinking check engine light! Even the gas needle in the dash wont move!

Is it possible that the alternator is short and needs to be replaced? If i replace it will everything work again?

You didn't hook it up backwards by chance did you? Not sure what has happened but it sounds like you have your hands full. Good luck and welcome to the board. Tug[addsig]
