Hello everyone! South Florida (Tampa) checking in! I have made the plunge (well kinda). I have decided to search for a CJ-7 to buy. I have always wanted one. I almost bought a new Wrangler in 1992, but it just was not in the cards. Well, now I have decided to get one, and what perfect timeing. A co-workers Mother is selling her deceased Husbands Jeeps. Now is where I give my first request for help. There are 2 jeeps being sold as a package deal:

79 CJ-7 - 304, 3sp auto, hard hop, full doors, 90k miles, front winch (used once), fulltime locked hubs (seems like 4WD HI and 4WD LOW is the only option), runs good, body rust, body rust, and body rust. Oh - and more body rust.
The Parts CJ-7 comes with it. Hard Top, extra hood, bucket seats, manual locking hubs, front winch), 4sp manual transmission (I think), also has a 304 motor (I think).

I am looking to buy this as a project. No work really intimidates me except electrical and A/C work (Hence why I chose a CJ-7 for my first project). Anyone thinks $3500 is a good price for these?

I assume a 3sp automatic in fulltime 4WD will drink gas like a fish drinks water. What would be involved in making it so that I could manually get out of the jeep and engage the hubs for 4WD? Would it be a simple hub assembly swap?

I am really looking forward to this project!!!

welcome aboard, you came to the right place. I don't know much about the cj's, but $3500 for both sounds ok. Sound like a fun project. I would walk up to her with $2500 cash first and see if she bites on it. Money makes the world go around. Keep us posted on how you do, and good luck!

yeah you can replace the hubs, or you can get a wrangler axle and do what's gotta be done to fit in there... i think just the spring perches, it at all, would need to be moved... then you can get a manual cable 4wd switch.[addsig]

When you get it running like Forrest Gump...let me know. Only about 30 min. away in Lakeland. There are some other Fla. folks around here too...only if we could coordinate our Jeep breakdowns we all might have functioning Jeeps for a kick ass weekend one day. Good luck and don't go above 3K...they should bite for that...[addsig]

Hey welcome. Sounds like an ok deal to me. I have a 99 TJ, but I've always wanted a CJ-7 or CJ-8. Like the others said I would try a lower number first and then work from there 8-) [addsig]
