backspacing, how much

I know that the bolt pattern for an 89 YJ is 5 lugs at 4.5" apart. I believe that the standard backspacing is 4, but I'm not sure. What does it exactly mean? Does a higher number move the wheel out of the wheel well or vice versa? I'm looking to lift it this spring and get some 15x8s with 32"s. I had 31"s about a year ago and when I turned the wheel all the way to the left or right, the tire would rub the spring. Not good at 30mph.

Little info is much appreciated.

I'm running 15x8 on my 89 YJ and 31x10.50 tires. The backspacing on my wheels is 3.5 inches. I don't have any wheel rub. One of my friends ran 31x10.50 on his factory wheels for a while and they did rub wheen he cranked the wheel all the way. Hope this Helps Evan

I'm pretty sure that the YJ and TJ use the same wheel backspacing. I run 31x10.50 on my YJ on the factory wheels and the tires do rub the springs when I turn hard....I just mainly had to adjust my driving style accordingly....there is a way to adjust the steering stops....but I just haven't messed with it yet. With the TJ you might not have to worry because TJ's don't have leafs...the suspension is coils...although the tires may rub on the control arms instead...I'm not really sure.[addsig]

You turn the wheel all the way at 30mph in a jeep? yikes.

Anyways, the tj stock wheels and spacing wont work with 32's.

sorry, even 30" mud tires rub the controller arms just a touch.

youll need either wheel adapters or rims with an extra inch of

backspacing for full steering. 30 mph still seems fast for full

turn by the way.[addsig]
