Hi guys n gals! New here..I got my xj at the beginning of the new year and its time to make it look like a real xj. Money wise..i am puttin the lift money and tires into a college loan so it isnt a big problem. Just thought I'd get some advice and maybe see what lifts you fellas went with. Thanks a lot guys. Look forward to hearin from ya.
(Its all stock now)

Would that be a guaranteed student loan? Just curious.

MY XJ is currently part Rusty's, part Rubicon Express, Part Teraflex, and part Old Man Emu. Subject to change.

The best XJ lifts I've seen are a compilation of several brands, mostly RE and Rusty's. I'd check out the Clayton longarm kit, it appears to be very popular amongst the station wagon jeepers.

I think RE is the best lift out there for the XJ. Long arm. But for the money, Rusty's is the better buy. I love mine. What do you plan on running tire-wise?

BTW welcome aboard!

PS- I answered your PM.

If you want to go with a long arm setup, it will cost a lot more, but look into either Skyjacker's or Full Traction's 6" long arm kit. They both use a true 4-link design like the stock design which allows caster to remain correct no matter how flexed out you are. RE, Clayton, Rusty's, and almost all of the others use a radius arm design which mounts the upper control arm to the lower arm instead of the frame. I have read that some folks opt to use only one of the upper control arms.

I recently spent a lot of time researching this topic, as I wanted to go long arm myself. I came to the conclusion that I didn't have enough cash to do it the right way (4 link) so I want with control arm drop brackets instead.

RE: Accident

thanks for the replies guys! Much needed advice.
mingez- i would love to run 35's, ( i think they look beastly on dirks dpg black xj) but 33x12.5 will do I guess..maybe 34s? I live south of Pittsburgh PA and mostly around here there is just muddin and deep water spots to wade through...(I need to go to the mountains or something) as much as I love flex, im not sure if the extra $ spent will be worth it. Will I have to trim the fenders if I run 12.5s no matter what the diameter? thnks for answerin the pm buddy.

twisted copper- yeah its one of those..they dont contact the school to see what u are using it for or to see how much u really need. So the interest will kill me later on...but its deferred and I cant wait any longer to get the lift!!! Im sure you boys understand =)
I have one lil nagging question though...center of gravity...i love climbing hills...and i was a lil worried that the higher COG would make it a lil more dangerous...just a thought
another random thought....internal roll cage? gay or yay?
one more thing that might be important....it will be a daily driver for a lil while. but then itll become the "tank"
I understand what you are saying with the 4 link as well TC, I cant get prices on the two u mentioned though.
and i promise the last question here.....I am worried if I have someone put it on...they will F something up and i`ll either end up dead or in prison for killing the person who was responsible for me ruining my rig.
thanks fellas...sorry i`m an idiot. Im a senior @ Pitt but I just cheat alot =Þ
so pretty much I want you guys to make me a huge list of what to do..it can be like your project xj...preferrably in order of most important and what to do first!
haha glad to be here!! finally found my xj a good home!

If you borrow $3000 for lift, wheels and tires you will end up paying almost $1000 in interest.. those rates are going up in July..

Back on the lift.
I have the Rusy's 3" AAL, I too, think they are decent welll designed, good driving lifts. If I had it to do over, I might have looked harder at the Rubicon Express lifts though. The Rusty's rear brake line extenstion bracket is junk. Toss it and get a longer line to start with for about $20.
I think a TJ rear stock line is about 4 inches longer and bolts right up,

If you are going to 3 or over, don't even think about not getting an adjustable track bar with the lift. You need that to keep your front axle centered.

have fun

RE: Error CODE Help NEEDED

internal/external roll cages are definately not gay. they save lives, bottom line. if you have the money, good investment.

as for what to do first, make sure you have recovery points, front AND rear. then make sure you have armor all over. 6+ inches of lift is going to get you into places where you'll need the protection. get all the skids for the underbody, you could search a junkyard for those. and sliders are always a good idea.

and lastly, put it on yourself. do all your work yourself. that way you know your vehicle, and you know the quality of craftsmanship. i'm not sure what your knowledge of mechanics is, but if you're doing this much to your vehicle, its worth learning about it. plus, paying someone to do it is going to be expensive. my advice on this part, look into some local clubs, i'm in one, and anytime someone buys a new lift, 5+ guys jump to help. usually the vehicle owner supplies beer and pizza or something like that, and its a great day to turn some wrenches, meet some people, and learn some stuff. so do it yourself for sure, and i'm sure you can get some help easily if needed.
