Can I leave it in there..

So I got everything done with my front differential, got my new axle shafts in, i put my aussie locker in, got the new diff cover all sealed up and on there, went to fill up the diff(which is the only thing left to do) and the cap from the oil bottle falls in... So my question, which is stupid but I figured Id ask, can I leave it in there or should i remove everything again and remove it? Other thing, I broke my last t-30 star key for the bolts.

You're going to have to drain it and start over. You're asking for trouble if you try to drive with the cap in there.

if this was on a trail and you were in a pinch, I'd say leave it, since your in your driveway and just being lazy (JK) drain it and re-do it.

when on the trail, when I have to swap a C-clip axle, I usually put the oil into a plastic Baggy (you kow the zip lock type) after the axle shaft swap, I usually just put the entire bag into the diff, seal it up and run it. the plastic is spft enough that the gears will just chew it up, but I would not do it for hi-speed driving or long period of time. the plastic can semi melt and get in the pinion bearing and possibly seize it.

you could unbolt the u-bolts and dump everything out the filler hole. not faster but saves you from undoing all the stuff you did already

I ordered some lubelockers because I am coming to find out how much I hate silicone, and it turns out the stuff I bought can't be used with diffs that use an additive.(Which it doesn't say on the tube, found that out on the internet.)

Lubelockers are totally worth it, in my opinion. I paid like $15 a piece for them from 4WD Hardware. I had so much trouble getting a good seal on my diffs...I had trouble getting the covers on without screwing up the bead. With the Lubelockers, what I do is put a little bit of silicone on one side and attach the gasket to the diff cover and let it set for 10-15 minutes so the silicone basically holds the gasket in place while you re-install the cover. Torque her down and you're done - no leaks! I have yet to try re-using them though...while they advertise that they are reusable, it says in the instructions that come with them that it isn't recommended. (To be specific, it says something along the lines of 'many customers have told us that they were actually able to reuse the same gasket, but we cannot guarantee the performance after one use')

Like I said multiple times, not trying to be an a**, but I didn't put in any gear oil before this happened.

If you are rich, leave it in and take a chance. If you are not rich, invest your time and pull the cover and fish the thing out. Hopefully after pulling the cover you won't see the cap laying on the floor across the garage.

Make sure you get every last drop of oil that you put in there out, and I mean every last drop if you have to, smear the gears with peanut butter and get a dog to lick it off.

Just make sure you get all that oil that I read you put in there out.
