This message is for anyone who's had problems with getting your carbureted 258 to start and hold without any stalling, stumbling and wild fluctuations in RPMs.

For me, it all started with idle RPM instability, bogging and stalling. I noticed the idle pickup tubes were dribbling fuel - an indication of clogged tubes. I removed the tubes and venturi cluster and blasted it all with carb cleaner. To my amazement, idle returned to normal and the engine was purring beautifully.

Weeks later a new problem arose. For a few months now I've had a hellish time firing up my engine. I'd have to hold my starter motor for a few seconds while revving the engine until it finally sparked up and held. This would sometimes go on for 3/4 of an hour. I replaced the battery, ignition coil, spark plugs and wires and nothing. I went to a mechanic and he said it could be a faulty ignition switch. Something about that comment didn't sit right with me and so I cancelled on replacing the switch.

So, a friend told me his father-in-law had the exact same problem with his 90 YJ with a 258 and same model carb. (same model YJ and engine, too) He bought a carb rebuild kit and rebuilt, adjusted and thoroughly cleaned out his carb. The problem never returned. I decided to do the same but was reluctant because I was nervous of mucking things up. When it comes to do-it-yourself mechanics, I'm not exactly a pro. Basically the only thing I knew how to do was change the engine oil. Well, after rebuilding, adjusting and cleaning my carb, I haven't had any problems with firing up my engine. Taking that damn carb apart was a good thing because I noticed that the metering rod cam arms were broken off. I'm guessing these arms control the vacuum piston which aids in pumping fuel. That could've been part of the problem. I tried gluing the arms back on, but they broke off the cam on the accelator pump lever after a few days. I did some fishing around online and found that bloody part at Carbs Unlimited, Inc. My Wrangler is still sparking up fine, but I can't wait to complete the job when that cam arrives.

The basic message here is if I can fix the problem with a $13.00 rebuild kit, $5.00 worth of carb cleaner and an $8.00 metering rod cam, I think anyone can. BELIEVE ME! Beats the hell out of paying $219.00 for a new rebuilt carb.

I hope this helps anyone who's having similar problems.[addsig]
