Caster Adjustment

Ok, I got rid to the wobble problem when touching the brakes at 50mph by replacing the rotors. I guess they were off balance because they weren't warped.

I had also installed some adjustable cam bolts to adjust the caster and was wondering how far to adjust them. The washer has markings around it from 9 o'clock to 3 o'clock. If I go all the way to 3, I get wobble at 50mph and if I go back to 9 I get the same wobble. Which way and how far should I adjust?

Well, go to the 12 oclock position, and adjust from there.Just a guess. I'm ignorant about how to adjust ,or where the adjustment may be,could someone post a picture or schematic as to where that adjustment is. If I remember correctly, on one of lilredyj's post at one time she had mentioned about setting it at -5 degrees.

You have to make sure your toe is set proper as well otherwise you will never get rid of it. I shoot for .25 degrees. Total toe.

With a 2" lift I always max out the caster adjustment with the cam bolts, pushing the bottom of the front axle as far forward as the cam bolts allow. It's a good compromise between caster and pinion angle and has worked great on all the TJ's I've lifted.

gennybro, the adjusment is made via an adjustable cam bolt at the axle end of the lower control arms. The cams fit in slots in the axle brackets and move the bottom of the axle forward or back based on how the cam bolt is positioned.

When I posted this I had the axle as far forward as it would go. I went home at lunch and moved it back one increment. Still wobbling. I will try a few more times before I take it in to Lowcountry 4x4 next Friday. If they can't fix it then I'll have a Jeep for sale. Dealing with this off and on for 7 years is enough. I love my jeep but it ****es me off that DC would continue to build a vehicle they know has a problem when lifted. And they know many people will lift them.

I had the same experience with my 05 TJ, and it ended up being a number of problems. My ball joints were worn as well as my trackbar. I replaced my lower control arms (I don't think I needed to now), and paid for 3 alignments before buying a lifetime alignment from Firestone.

Chances are that you've got some worn parts that have too much play in them.

Possibly, I have faith in LC 4x4 here in town. They said they've got experience in fixing DW.


Correction on my previous comment - Ignore that 7 year comment. I just checked my notes and I put the lift on 3 1/2 years ago but I could always feel a touch of wobble since about 15,000 miles. Not a full wobble but a slight hint of it.
