Cherokee speed sensor

RE: jeeping husband 1.0

Hello, I am new to this forum. I was wondering if anyone could help me on this.
I have a '92 cherokee and I need to replace the speed sensor. The collar nut on the old one broke and it wont stay on the transfer case. The jeep dealer has a replacement sensor, but it looks a bit different than the old one.
It seems the new one has a plastic housing for the sensor and that housing connects to the case. It also seems that the new sensor has three wires to the harness and the old one has two. Will this new one work with mine? Before I spend the money on it I was wondering if anyone else has had to replace theirs.
Thanks in advance.

...Hmm... I have never replaced this, but I am skeptical based on what you have written... Sounds like they might have given you the wrong part (the dealership?!? No...)

But I could very very easily be wrong, at any rate, welcome to Jeepz :)

RE: stock fog lamps

Welcome to the "Z"!! You'll not regret coming here. I can't help any (Wrangler guy), but like Saurian said, what the dealership told you doesn't sound good (3 wires new, 2 wires old?????). Hopefully, our resident electrical guru XJNick will chime in to help you! Good luck, and happy Jeepin'!!!!

RE: leaf spring prob ?

I appreciate everyones opinions. I am glad that I discovered this message board. I love my jeep and plan to keep it as long as I can.
I spoke to an auto parts store and they had the speed sensor in stock. I had them describe it to me and it seems to match the part that is currently on my jeep.
Thanks again.

Hi,

I don't know much about the Cherokee speed sensors, as my Cherokee is old and has a mechanical cable instead of an electronic sensor for the Speedometer.

However, you should definately get one that has the same type of connection as your old one. Most speed sensors are Hall Effect sensors (they send a signal to the computer by changing their inductance as a magnet spins past them). Most Hall Effect sensors have three wires: V+, Signal, and Ground. V+ should be 5-volts (or whatever your computer uses to power all it's sensors). The speed sensor with two wires is probably still a Hall effect sensor, but the ground wire is probably removed and the sensor is grounded straight to the metal it screws in to....

Either way, find the three wire one. It will be less hassle...
