CJ10 - swapping CEC ignition for HEI

Hi guys. New to the forum and failry new to Jeeps.

I've been trying to help my neighbour out with his CJ10 with a 258. We want to trash the whole CEC ignition system and go with something else. I've been looking at an HEI distributor on ebay.

I've read everywhere (but not fully understood) about the nutter bypass, etc, etc,... but seriously, swappping the coil, dist, cec, ballast resistor and everything in between for an HEI and 12 volts HAS to be the simplest option right?

As for the BBD carby is there anything i should know about? Is it easier to just swap it with a manually-tuned carby? If so what are my options?

Sorry for all the questions guys. Any info is appreciated.

Ok, have done a bit more research and come to conclude... the CJ10 doesn't have the CEC fitted. The silver box that i thought was the computer part of the CEC is actually the Motorcraft breakerless ignition box. The distributor is stock and the carb is a manually adjustable Carter, not the BBD i first thought it was. As you can probably tell I have zero experience working on jeeps, and usually work on older stuff than CJ10s anyway. But thanks for the replies.

TerryMason the problem is the ignition cutting out while driving whenever it wants to. Losing power brakes and steering at full highway speed is about as dangerous as it gets, especially when towing. Happens at least once a week or so without warning. Have to wait 5/10 mins or so before she'll start again.

The owner says he's had counltless auto electricians look at it and replaced everything. The most recent one replaced the ballast resistor and related wiring, to no avail.

I'm looking to keep it simple. Do i replace everthing for an HEI and hook up 12 volts or can i still buy a reconditioned points distributor for a 258 and go down that route (which is just as simple for me)?
