Cj5 or cj7

I have a 1977 jeep and am confused if it is a cj5 or cj7. I have a chiltons book and it is saying the vin is a cj5 but the wheel base measures for a cj7? Is there any other way to tell them apart?

Just look at the door / opening
5's are smaller....

A picture would go a long way here but what is the shape of the door area? A CJ7 will look like a wrangler, square-ish while a CJ5 will have a curved shape on the backside of the opening. The one exception would be a CJ6 which will look like a CJ5 but be longer like a CJ7 Bumper to Bumper.

1977 CJ5 = 83.5” Wheel Base, 138.4” Bumper to Bumper
1977 CJ7 = 93.5” Wheel Base, 147.9” Bumper to Bumper

Not sure what state you're in,but I've seen many Jeeps mis-named on Illinos titles. I've owned a CJ7 that the title called a CJ5 and a CJ5 that the state called a wagon...Saddle Tramps reply should answer your question.

Thanks for the info!! i will measure the wheel base and bumper to bumper. 94 inch wb and 150 inch bumper to bumper! Don't make sense that the chilton's book says it is a cj5 by reading the vin#.

Well, it’s a 7 not a 5 no matter what the VIN says. You should have a VIN sticker on the dash driver’s side and a VIN plate on the firewall driver’s side. Also the VIN should be stamped on the top of the frame rail over the rear passenger wheel. I would check to see if they all match.

Cute pink bootys is a good idea, I think it would go well with your blaze orange vest. OK, so enough of fun and games,we are takeing this thread off path,in which I didnt help matters any. But what to heck gotta throw a little fun in there once in a while.
I had a 75 cj5 6 banger,had it for only a year but I didnt have any issues with it,got 18 mpg with it. Sold it to chase a skirt to Alabama,That will never happen again.
