CJ7 6 cylinder

The jeep was running good and someone left the ignition on overnight. The next day battery was dead and the jeep will not idle. Any ideas what could be causing this?

its likely the ignition coil has overheated . Check any wiring to'it and to the starter relay for signs of burned insulation which will indicate burned copper strands . The ignition module may have taken a hit as well . See if the grease that is supposed to be applied to its bottom side has dried up . Dielectric grease is not the best for ignition modules , it retains heat in the module . You'll,want something that pulls heat from the module . Heat sink compound ( like from radio shack ) is good . Wondering if the thermal pastes used for CPU to motherboard will work as well. Check reluctor and stator in the distributor for signs of discoloration which indicate overheating. Those are the parts that replaced the ignition points and condensers .

The jeep isn't mine and it is up at our hunting club, but I'm pretty certain it has points. I think it is an 82, but I'll check with the owner.

It is an 83 with electronic ignition.

Did you get the battery fully charged and load tested? A bad battery will cause issues. Clean all terminals and the opposite side of the grounds.

I haven't posted any possible fixes, but I have been keeping up with the thread in hopes of learning what you found to be the cause. Let us know please. Thanks.
