Creating a winch bag...or buy a kit?

Well the two weeks of summer here in Oregon will be upon us before too long and I want this year to be the year 'Betty' earns her spurs (me too, been far too long) and really get into the sticks.

Looking over winch kits (shackles, strap, and snatch block) on EBay and elsewhere they seem to be going for upwards of $90-$100 bucks. For the same (or even less money) it seems to me that I can get even higher rated gear for less (or am I looking for gear in all the wrong places)?

Rigged ridge makes a really nice starter kit. D-rings tree saver 30ft strap. Snatch block. A pair of gloves and a cable weight bag. I forgot what I paid but it wasn't more than 30. The bag is kinda cheap. So I went out and got a medium husky tool bag from home depot .. Do I had plenty of room for more stuff. I have 100ft of rope two more shackles. And a set of axle straps and I'm still adding to it!! I hope this helps!

30 bucks?!? I've gotta check this out. I've been looking for a decently priced kit for a while now, and most of them seem to be around 100. If this rugged ridge set is the real deal, im buying 10, and selling them on ebay. Lol.

Yeah it's not bad.... Sure it's not warn or super winch. But it does the job!!

I just bought industrial stuff... Everything is higher capacity than the typical which bags because in mud, you tend to use the snatch block and end up pulling more weight. Spent about $70 making mine, but it includes 5 shackles (I leave 4 on the bumpers; 2 front, 2 rear, as it is a PITA to have to get in the mud to hook up a shackle when you get stuck), 2 tow straps, a tree saver, and gloves. I use the Jeeps mats as weight for the line.

Couldn't find any Rugged Ridge kits for less than $90, at $30 that's a helluva deal. I have a pair of shackles I got from Timber Supply in Philomath mounted on my front bumper. No rear bumper but I could hook to something if the situation called for it. Also got a tree hugger a while back. Perhaps I'll swing back to Timber Supply for the snatch block.

...just gave 'em a call and the snatch block alone is 36 clams, about median price I reckon

I think you're on the right track going with industrial/logging eqpt. I agree the "ready made" winch bags always seemed over priced. I got a snatch block at Tractor Supply for under $40 & the rest of the stuff I've pieced together from Farm or Industrial stores. You have your pick of weight rattings etc. at those types of stores.

Build a Jeep or Buy a Built Jeep? Build a Bag or Buy a Built Bag? It comes down to what you want out of the experience of the Jeep world.

I just pieced together a winch kit. to be honest, a D-ring gets used the most and a quality strap. at a minimum you should have 1- 3/4 D-ring, a tree saver and quality strap. I also have a snatch block but rarely use it. for gloves I just use some heavey leather work gloves from the hardware store. I found the marine store to be a good source for D-rings cheap, granted I live on the ocean so my marine store has some more Heavy Duty Stuff.

Good Luck

Got this PW 4" greasable and a pair of shackles for $40 at Timber Supply. Haven't seen many snatch blocks like this but the old school guy was confident.
