Engine Identification

I have an '88 Wrangler. It is apparent the engine is not original. Is there a way to identify the engine via a number or something? Some of you may even be able to tell by its characteristics. It would help me in terms of getting the right parts and manual for it. [addsig]

Tell us a bit more about the jeep and the motor. 4 6 or 8 give us a few clues to go on. Tug :-? [addsig]

It is a Laredo. The engine is a straight 6, I believe a 4.2 liter. The valve cover is aluminum. It is a manual transmission (5 speed). The power steering is a fixed mounting, no adjustments. It has 3 belts. One for power steering, one for A/C and one from the A/C to the alternator. It is carbureted. These are the items I can think of/know of that might help with identification. Are there others? The transmission has the slave cylinder inside the cover.[addsig]

I had an '88 YJ Laredo at one time, red with gray stripes and gray interior. What makes you think the engine is not original?

Here is what you SHOULD have:
  • Engine= 4.2L inline 6cyl. with BBD carbuerator
  • Peugeot BA10/5 manual 5-spd transmission
  • NP231J transfer case, 2.72 low gear
  • Dana 30 front, Dana 35 rear axles, 3.07 gear ratio

I swapped the 4.2L in mine for a Chevy 350 V8, it had plenty of power then, easy to tell the engine was not original when it'd lift a front tire off the ground :-O [addsig]

Mechanics who have worked on it have told me. Details of procedures in a Haynes manual do not match what I have (i.e. oil pressure sensor, power steering pump). When buying belts for it the parts store showed it should have a serpentine belt...it has three. Little hints here or there, nothing specific...maybe it is original...maybe Haynes etc. are not that accurate.[addsig]

This is a long shot, but they might have swapped in a 232. It is identical to the 258. I don't really think anyone would swap in an engine with less HP but it's still a possibility.[addsig]

I don't have that '88 YJ anymore, and no pictures of the wheely but you could feel it when that tire touched back down.

I ran the stock Peugeot BA10/5 transmission behind the 350 with an AA adapter bellhousing and CenterForce clutch. AA motormounts and had the stock radiator rebuilt to 3-core.

I'd do it again, but not with a 350. Probably a Vortec 4.3L V6, sometimes less is more :-O [addsig]
