ok im looking at buying a 1978 jeep 258ci engine and i need to know if there is any modifications that i will need to do to fit it in my jeep i have a 1989 jeep wrangler (islander) and it has the 4.2 258ci i just need to know if it is going to be a direct fit swap and if there are any differences between the 1978 and 1989 258ci engine

well actually as stupid as it is, its not actually legal (in the US) to swap a older motor into a new vehicle. its not really legal to swap any motor from any other year older or newer, but they have to catch it and prove it, and as long as you have all of the original emissions control crap for the yr of vehicle the motor is going into then it will be hard to prove and no one will really care lol

According to Novak Conversions, "1987-present 4.0L engines require crank position sensing (CPS or CKP), so any installation using an earlier 258 bellhousing requires a modification to accept this sensor. Novak assists many customers with these bellhousings. Note that 4.0L flywheels have a tooth pattern machined into them for the above sensor's operation."

They have more info on their web site and would also be worth a phone call.

yes it is not legal to put a older eng into a newer vehicle

if your swapping a eng it needs to be same year of vehicle or newer with all the proper emissions
And this is 100% legal as long as you have the paper work from donor
