After watching what was the worst officiated game in Super Bowl history, my friends and I decided to go get some coffee (as is customary in the Group) and chat about the many nonsensical crap we talk about.
Well, to say the least, it was one of the more Seinfeldian discussions we have had in quite a while.
Suddenly, these youngish 20 something’s walked into the restaurant with their Starbucks Lattes. Now, keep in mind we are in Village Inn. Not exactly the highest class of joints. We then get into a 30 Min debate about whether or not doing so is considered “Bad Formâ€.
Jamie and I say “No†, while Koji and Ed say “Yesâ€.
Ko’s argument was that it’s rude and tacky #1, and bad for business #2 due to the possibility that a customer may see the Starbuck’s cup and decide to leave and go there instead.
I say, BS. VI isn’t in competition with Starbucks because they don’t serve Latte’s or Cap’s, and regardless of that fact it’s okay AS LONG AS I AM SPENDING MONEY AT THE ESTABLISHMENT. I think people are too sensitive towards “Social Graces.â€
Keep in mind Ko goes about his meager existence caring what everyone thinks about him. He cited the example of bringing a hotdog to VI and eating it in the restaurant. But in this one instance I must admit I thought he had a point. I stated that I definitely wouldn’t eat a hotdog from another restaurant IN Village Inn. "Why" he asked? I couldn’t answer that. At the time I conceded the point to a difference in what each of us consider “The Line.â€
Also consider the fact that Koji’s coming from the perspective of being a former restaurateur and claims he’s told some of his customers that they can’t bring any outside drinks into his establishment. --If any restaurant told me that, I’d never eat there again.
But I am a former Waiter. (To me, I see it as one less coffee cup/iced tea I have to keep full)
My friend Ed goes so far as to say he wouldn’t even eat a Kit Kat in Village Inn.
But after I got home, I continued to think about the argument. I didn’t think it was fair to the rest of you that I allow you all to live in a world where Koji has a point about anything. I figured out why the hot dog was “too much†of a faux pas for me, as opposed to the Latte. It’s because VI’s bread and butter is FOOD. They don’t make money off of their coffee (well, very little). And let’s face it, people go there not to drink coffee, but to sit around and loiter, with the pretense of patronage and coffee drinking as a reason for sitting around for 5 hours while talking, studying, or killing time.
For me it comes down to this: do you want my business or don’t you? If so, then as a business owner give me some flexibility and let me bring in my Starbucks, Aquafina, Kit Kat bar, or Fruit Roll Ups into your establishment, and I’ll spend about 12 bucks eating your horrible ham and cheese skillets. (over-easy please, and Tabasco por favor)
If VI only served coffee, they’d go out of business at $1.39 / cup. Besides, the coffee’s weaker than Michael Jackson under a barbell, and truth be told, I think that if VI could limit the amount of loitering coffee drinkers, they’d be just as well for it.
What do you think? Do you agree it’s a Faux Pas to bring in a Starbucks Cup to a Restaurant? What about eating a Twix candy bar inside VI?
I stand by my opinion that he’s being way too sensitive.
