Fiat will take a 35% stake in Chrysler to gain access to the U.S. market but will pay nothing for it.

Chrysler has once more found a savior across the Atlantic to help keep it alive, except this time it is not German but Italian. Fiat confirmed late Tuesday morning in Milan that it had struck a nonbinding pact with the American carmaker in which it would take a 35.0% stake in Chrysler and share products and platforms with the firm.

A final accord will be agreed "in due course," a Fiat spokesman told Forbes, although Fiat will not pay a cent for its stake and has made no commitment to funding Chrysler in the future. In return, Chrysler will get access to Fiat's small-car technology.
