First gear problems

I've been having problems putting my jeep in first gear without putting it in reverse first, and when putting it in reverse it grinds. If anyone has a clue what the problem might be Id greatly appreciate the help.
I'm driving a 83 CJ-7 and I dont know the Transmission I'm driving it is a 5 speed and that about all I know.

There are a few possibilities. The TWO times this has happened to me, it was my linkage. I don't know what kind of jeep you're running: mine is old enough that I have a mechanical linkage, which can give you all kinds of fits. Does the jeep pull without problems when it is in gear? If so, it's probably not your clutch. I'd check the clutch linkage first, and possibly the synchros.

What year and transmission do you have? I know that on my 85 CJ (with the t-5) you have to shift into first before you shift into reverse for the synchros to work properly.
