i wouldn't think the cat.

any vacuum leaks?

Ken,
Did you mean 29"? I looked on the super swamper website and couldn't find anything smaller than a 31".

As to your fuel milage, when that Jeep rolled off the showroom floor it could pull an estimated 15mpg with stock tires:
Model 1 Vehicle Characteristics

Have you noticed a change in fuel mileage lately, or has it always gotten about 11mpg?

Do you have any heavy accessories, like bumpers, skid plates, etc?

my XJ can pull a horse trailer with two horses from here to roanoke and average better mileage than that, rolling on 32s. no trailer, 21-23 hwy.

and i've pushing about 270 hp, 330 ft/lbs.

might be time for an upgrade. ;)

definatly runing 29" superswamper sx radials (love them ) . no vac leaks that we have found any where . no skids or heavy bumpers just a 2" body lift . this jeep has always got terable fuel mileage only about 14 with stockers . got the same running 31x11.5 coopers on it . this jeep seams to be lower geard than most by a lot . i am going to check the ratio on it . i think it may be in the 456 ratio area . i am told the stock ratio is 410 . thanks for the replies .

Yeah, stock ratio is 410. Might check your O2 sensor. Mudwoman's YJ (94) sat for 4 years when we were in Louisiana. After $2700 in repairs (cooling system, brakes, clutch, and a new cat) we were getting about 12 mpg out of her.:shock: Check engine light on (which it had been for years). Replaced the O2 sensor (check engine light off!!!) and she's been getting better mileage ever since.......hoping to get back to the 20 mpg she was getting before we neglecter her.

well i found out the problem . i have 456 gears in this one . the original owner had them put in when it was new . he said it went from 15to 17 mpg to about 12mpg when he done it .

if your near corpus, i'll give you 3.07 axles in trade for those old crappy ones you got now. :)

sorry superj i am in central missouri . now that i know the cause i will stop worring about it . i would hate to think how gutless it would be with a 307

4.56 shouldn't hurt your mileage that much, they should actually help it as it returns the engine to it's proper powerband after installing the slightly taller and much heavier tires. Case in point, I run 35" and sometimes 36" tires under my 2.5L Jeep and I get 14-17mpg due to the 5.38 axle gears. It's all about keeping the RPM's up so the engine isn't lugging.

I think the cause lies elsewhere, you should be up over 15.

i think i am just going to sell the yj and get a cherokee . looking for a bit more room for the hunting trips with my boy's .

poop your xj is what i realy want to build but a bit less motor for needs a stock 4.0 would be great . problem is my budget is about 1/2 what you want for yours . i will probably traded the yj for a solid stock xj and build it in stages as the wallet allows .

don't let people scare you away from the renix fuel injection older cherokees with the 4.0 if you come across a good deal on one. i think they are 87 to 90 or 91, something like that. they have the non high out put 4.0 but they are solid dependable motors that are very easy to trouble shoot. my previous jeep was an 87 cherokee with a 5" lift and 31s and it was a super comfy highway jeep and off road jeep.
