Gas Mileage?

What kind of gas mileage are you guys getting? I'm looking into a wrangler but it will be uses for a daily driver delivering on the city. If I could manage 22mpg then I should be good. Is the 2.5l capable of this? Also, can you fit a carseat in the back seat?

the thread right below this one is about mileage.

22? better look for something else

Yes but they didn't specify what they're setup was. Really was hoping the 4 Banger could break into the 20s in the city. My Max speed is around 55 MPH and only for about 5-10 minutes, otherwise I average about 35mph

As mentioned in the referenced thread, I work with a guy who has an 98 TJ 4 banger, all stock, and he claims he can't get better than 14 mpg on his daily commute. I have ridden with him to work and home a couple times, and he's by no means a hot rod with it, so not sure why he can't get any better than 14. I have an 04 TJ with the 6L and I average 17.6 mpg on the same commute. Mine is all stock except for the 30X9.5-15 tires. They are Nexen with more of a street tread (similar look to Michelin LTX). My bud runs the stock 235/70-15 Goodyear Wranglers. Not sure what pressure he runs in his, but I keep mine aired up to 40 psi. The ride is stiff, but it helps gas mileage. Both our Jeeps are 5 speed. Another buddy has an 04 Sahara with an automatic and he claims he can't get better than 14 mpg either, but he's running 31X10.5-15's on his with stock suspension. All three engines are bone stock. Personally, I think driving style has as big an effect on gas mileage as lifts and big tires. Taking it easy off the line and shifting at optimal times helps a lot.

Jeep Wrangler Gas Mileage

Interesting how the gas mileage took a swing from better to worse between the manual and auto transmission from 2002 to 2004! Especially being as my 04 with a manual is getting 17 mpg city and a friends 04 with an Auto gets 14 mpg.

On-road, 4-banger TJ's aren't any better on gas than 6's. If you have an automatic like ours, it's actually worse.
According to my cousin, who's had more Jeeps than I've had underwear, off-road a 4-banger is much better on gas than a 6. If you're going where there isn't any gas for a while, this is good.
The thing with city mpg is, all the time you spend at red lights and stuck in traffic averages in at 0 mpg.
Your best mpg with a Jeep will be a 4-banger with a stick but even then it won't be much better, if at all, than a 6. Bud of mine has had Jeeps for years and recently got another one for his commuter vehicle since he has a hike down the PA Turnpike to work. He looked for a while to find a 2006 4-banger with a 6 speed, told me that's the only year made with that driveline.

I've got an 06 2.4L. I had the 6 speed and recently junked it cause it dropped 4th gear. But now with the 5 speed from an 04 on getting 21 mpg plus. And they had the 2.4l six speed in 05 and 06 ... 03. To 04 had the nv1500 5 speed.
