gas mileage

New 258 engine,w/weber 551 carb,rejetted for 4,000 elev,still mileage is unaccepable,how far can I go with rejetting without damage????what damage might occur??what other options???any suggestions???? I use almost twice the gas as any one else in our club going on the same run....

I am not sur what the max or min on jetting is but the worst you can do is melt a hole in a piston from an overly lean condition. I get about 9 in town on mine so I know what your saying

Ditch the carb and run EFI.


if your fuel consumption is that much, there has to be some tuning issues. with a crappy running 1 bbl carb on an L head 4 banger, I was still pulling down a solid 10 mpg around town, highway was little worse, no warn overdrive.

What is your mileage? Is is under 10 mpg? You could have a fuel leak, or some other problem.

If you're asking what will happen if you lean the engine out too much, the answer is that you'll get engine knocking, it'll run hotter, and if lean enough it'll tear the engine up.
