guess that head

ok, am planning my head /water pump job and did some more reading and it seems that a 4.2 head on a 4.0 block should not line up perfectly, hence the reason for people sealing off the water jackets. this prompted me to pop the hood and check out my engine again as i never noticed any over hangs or lips around the block head mating surface. i still don;t see one now. can someone look at the pics i have and tell me if this is a 4.0 or 4.2 head on top of my 4.0 block?

this is to verify, besides by the numbers, that its a 4.0 block. no fuel pump spot

top view. looks like a 4.2 to me but i am no expert

i have looked at pages and pages of pics but i must not know what to look at to tell. there are so many different valve covers and hose configurations on people's different engines that i don;t know what i have

see in that last picture, i circled it in the red

that looks like a line from a different head being on this block. since the 4.0 head over hangs on a 4.2 block, that could be the 4.2 head not being as large and covering as much on the 4.0 block.

There should be a serial number some where on the head not to sure where but there should be one. Hope that helps u

I have been told that but I guess its under the valve cover. But I have already had it verified that yes, I have a 4.2 head on the 4.0 block. People seem to think I have a stroker, which I believe to be true because of the take off and power the jeep has but I hope to find something that says yes or no, for sure, when I swap heads

i'm curious why anyone would want to have a 4.2 head on a 4.0 block, built or not.

Look between the second and third cylinder on the right side above and slightly to the left of the fuel pump.

i have no fuel pump. my block has no mount for a fuel pump and i don;t know where to look other then between 2 & 3. i will look later as i am kind of bummed out that i started working to pull the water pump and sure enough, the pump the parts place gave me doesn;t match and there is not one closer then houston. they'll have it here tuesday.

ok, went and looked around and hte block is an 88, not a 98. so my stroker dreams are not whats going on. last time, i guess the shadow made it hard to see the bottom of the 8 because i brought a super bright light out this time and it is indeed an 88 block.

nothing on the head in the spot mentioned for numbers though. i looked all over for it. and also, no spot for a mechanic fuel pump either. what the heck does that mean?

nevermind, got the camera in close and its a 98. Still don't know why the 98 water pump won't fit nor what year the head is

Possible that the water pump you got was a reversed flow or something like that? It was mentioned on the forum a few days back but not to sure on the post

maybe but when i went back, they looked up the numbers again (a wrangler guy) and pulled down every number water pump they had in stock and it looks like the one that fits is an 88/89 water pump.

and they have to order it from another store up state

Ya I had my share of mishaps with the parts store guy. It seems like they can't match up the numbers cause there rushing atleast that's what happend in my case

maybe. the original guy was all ****ed off at something when i came in. he was cussing and walked away from the counter as soon as the door opened. once he came back though, he was really cool and brought down a bunch of water pumps but the one wasn;t the right one after all

Ya I used to go to autozone alot but after so many mistakes I stopped going there and started going to checkers now known as orielys

this is my oriellys, ha ha ha. its the best place in town. when i was in high school, we had an advanced auto but it closed down in 96. we haven't had an autoparts place in this section of town until last year when they built this oriellys.

I have no complains with checkers. They always get the parts right. And they will price match autozone and always beat there price. In my town I have a autozone, checker and napa auto parts. But napa is always the most expensive out of all of them
