gutless TJ

OK, sicnik posted about his gutless YJ and I feel his pain, only perhaps much worse. Don't get me wrong, I specifically requested the SE when I bought my Jeep. But my power curve on the '03 TJ has got me wondering.

My route home from work is comprised of several 7%-8%+ grades, the first of which starts as soon as I enter the highway. I run through the gears gettin' going, 4k rpm (55 mph) when I shift to fourth. I keep it floored all the way up and by the time I crest the hill I'm tachin' 2500 and barely holding 50 mph (4th, of course - I haven't thought about 5th gear in a couple of blue moons). Mrs. Mud traveled the same route yesterday in her '94 YJ 4banger and told me she had no problems - 60-65 all the way (no snickers, please, YJ'ers). My bro came to visit me a while back and told me he took Jellico Mtn. hill (I-75 at the Tenn/Ky border) in his 95 YJ 4banger without downshifting from 5th!! Mrs. Mud's L'il Red has no cat but my bro's does. And I've noticed the power difference when driving L'il Red.

So perhaps you can all help me in my quandry. Are my air bags and sissy plastic dash slowin' me down THAT much? Perhaps too much wind resistance on the coil springs?? I thought I read somewhere that the newer fuel-injected fours were supposed to have more horsepower, but you'd never know it by my little TJ!

Maybe I should just find a job in the flatlands?!?

looking for opinions,

That would be a great big deal if he can do in 5th. That is no small feat cause Jellico is steep and long. I have crawled over that rock in the slow truck lane pullin a load to many timew. tug

Does Edwards have Kerry confused with the second coming?!?!?

Do you have the 2.4L or did they start in the '04?

I thought the TJ's were supposed to be quicker with the windshield raked back

Its those darn coil springs! If it makes you feel any better, my gal has to really hamper on here 93 YJ 2.5 to get it going up a hill. Most are taken in fourth and she is usually slowing down towards the top. Good lil engine for wheeling and around town, but they are out of their place on the interstate.

Yeah, Bounty, I've got the 2.4L. I think they started them in '03 - the blurb on the DC/Jeep site says "22% more horsepower than the '02 model". Wonder where those extra horses are??.....perhaps held in reserve to power the airbags?!?

It's a smaller engine, with more horsepower........more than likely, the extra horses can be found in the upper RPMs where most Jeep owners hardly ever drive. You already had to spin the heck out of a 2.5 to get it to do anything.
Just wait until you start hearing new Jeep owners ask where all that extra power they were promised is when Jeep decides to ditch the 4.0 and go to a V6.

I hear that! They're stickin' those Liberty engines in them, aren't they (the 3.7L)??

I've read that the 2.4L is pretty gutless compared to the 2.5L, coming from a 2.5L owner who had test driven one. The 2.4L even has the electric fan from the factory.

I'd be really interested in seeing the HP and torque numbers on the 2.4L and 2.5L if somebody can find them.

I'd like to stick this thing on a dyno and give you some REAL HP numbers...........I'm tellin' ya, the Mrs. '94 2.5L puts this thing to shame.
