how do I replace this thing?

I am not sure what this thing is called, its like some kind of joint cover but its got grease in it and I don't want any dirt getting in it. any one know?

looks like the lower steering shaft....probably time for a new shaft...Borgeson makes a good one with ujoints at both ends instead of the "rag joint"(pictured) that wears out...Flaming River makes a good one too,ut I've never tried theirs..

Seriously?!? I have to replace the whole thing! Can't I just replace that one part?

just because the rubber took a squat,dosent mean there is anything wrong with the shaft,duct tape it up real good till ya get anouther rubber boot,since ya have to take the darn thing apart to put the boot on ,do that and inspect the shaftand there is probably some kind of u joint in there.But if your lucky its only the boot that took a squat.

Well I have the boot, but I don't really feel like taking it all apart right now. So I think I'll duct tape it in the mean time.

don't they make split boots, like for cv shaft repairs? i know you can get split boots for vw cv shafts, maybe they are close enough to the same size you can use one of those in place of the one? look in the air cooled vw books

That's a steering coupler. Parts for that are still available and that entire unit is still rebuildable if that's the route you want to go to. I've replaced mine with a frankenstein edition and eliminated the coupler with a u-joint from a GM steering shaft.
