what years can you find xj with the dana 44 in them and how can you identify these axle? would a chrysler 8.25 be a better axle be better then a dana 44??

Late 80s early 90s have a D44, I got mine out of an '89. You can tell the diffrence by looking at the diff cover. There is a comparison somewhere on the web with pics of all the different axles, dunno where. I'm not sure if the 8.25 is better or not, but it probably doesn't have the same WMS to WMS length. XJs and Wranglers have a 60" length.

The D44 and 8.25 are comparable in strength, but the D44 has more gear ratio and locker options being the more common axle.

The D44 was '87-'89 in the XJ and also found in the metric ton MJ (Comanche).

'97+ 8.25 is better as it is 29spline, older 8.25's have 27spline axleshafts.

Don't discount the Ford 8.8 from a '95+ Ford Exploder, you can find them as low as 4.11 (many other popular jeep gear ratios out there) and with or without the limited slip. Big plus is the disc brakes and the same jeep lug pattern. Nice heavy axle.

I was gonna mention the 8.8, but it's not bolt in and I get the feeling he want's bolt in.
