My TJ wont start NO fire

Ok guys I have a 97 TJ 4.0 and I need your help!:cry:

My jeep will turn over all day and not start.

What I have done/replaced;
ignition switch(it was sticking), the rotary on the other side of the switch, coil, plugs, wires, crank poss sens, distributor sensor (inside cap under rottary button), timing chain :shock:

It all started with it taking several times to turn it over to start it so I thought fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator so changed them.

Then was told to swap my ASR still nothing

But there are times I can go out turn it over and it will start :shock:

I HAVE NO CLUE PLEASE HELP!!!! :???:
 
Just so that I understand, you'd have to crank it a bit to get it to start. You replaced the fuel pressure regulator and pump, then it wouldn't start at all?

No it was doing this before and it continued to take 3 attempts for it to crank. Then there are times it would not crank and would not be gitting fire but If I let it sit for a day or to I could go out and it may fire right up. But right now all it will do is turn over and not start and it has no fire
 

Ok I have been working on it all day and its not getting fire! All my fusses are good, all my grounds are connected. I pulled a plug and stuck it in the coil wire and grounded the plug to my battery. turned it over and no fire. What am I missing what else would cause no fire??
 

Knock sensor won't cause a no start. Crank sensor will. It's on the bellhousing.

I baught a code checker and it is throwing a p1389 code for the auto shutdown relay but i am getting voltage to my fuse #11 on the panel and the the relay under the hood so Im guessing its my ECM???
 
are you getting spark on the wire from the coil to the distributor? are you getting power to the coil? work backwards from your trouble spot. you jumped around a lot in your parts replacing
 
TJust for the Record - - The last TWO Posters on this Thread -- Made some Excellent Points. I have been reading this Thread -- and have noted the sequence of events. It would seem that he has: FUEL - But - NO SPARK! Engine Code is a-- P1389. This is (as we know)a: ASD Relay Fault from the PCM! Ok. The ASD Relay is a KEY component in the. START Sequence of your JEEP! There are FOUR Terminals that we need to KNOW about- 2 for the COIL - 2 for the ContactS. Start with the CONTACTS: Term. 30 - Goes to Battery(12V - ALL the time) Check FIRST! Term. 87- To Ign. Coil (12V) Goes to 12V when ASD Relay energizes! Next the COIL side- Term86 - Goes to Ignition Switch (may be fused) This goes to 12V when KEY is ON! Last is Term- 85 - ASD relay control - GOES to GROUND when PCM tells ASD Relay to Energize! Possible Problems: 1. ASD Relay ckt OPEN 2. 12V (B+) Open to term 30 3. ASDRelay 4. Bad wiring - or Bad connections 5. Bad PCM. CHECK for 12V on TERM 30! (ASD relay out) Is it there?? You will NEED a VOLTMETER to Check! Turn KEY ON - - Does Term 86 now. have 12Volts?? (Term 30 HOT ALL the time) One more thing - Term 87 (ASD output) - Should BECOME 12volts when YOU attempt to START the JEEP! This +12V to: Ignition Coil and injectors AND to PCM term C12! This is the PCM monitor line! PCM is in PARAllel with The ASD relay - - It Monitors the Relay! If NO ASD output - then kicks out a P1389 code! Good Luck! That is how she works - - JB
 

Your welcome! I have writers cramp - AFTER Writing it! LOL! A few questions - For the NO START Problem: 1. Do you have 12V to Positive Side of Ignition Coil?? 2.ANY Spark out of Ignition Coil - when CRANKING? 3. Any other CODES? -- 4. Did You. RE-verify --- ALL WORK --Performed on JEEP OK? Sometimes in the HEAT of Battle - THINGS HAPPEN! Good to Re-Check all work. Then Proceed-- JB

Thanks all the great knoledge only thing is I did not understand alot of it. I put a voltmetter on the ASD i have 12v there and to the fuse box. i tested it the coil and while trying to crank only .1 or so. What happened was it would take 3 time to get my jeep to crank (turning it over) then one day at work it would not crank at all. I waited about 10min come back and it fired right up. It did this for a while. But not all the time just every now and then would not start at all. Till one day it would not start at all. So i had it towed home. I checked the crank sensor by getting a new one and that did not work. I then changed the new coil that did not work. I then changed the sensor in distributor and it all ready had new wires and plugs and timming chain. I then changed my ignition switch and key cause it was very hard to get it to work so I thought that may be the problem. And I changed the switch rotor on the left side of the colum then. I have checked all my grounds and they are connected. I chassed my wires they all look good. I have not checked backwards cause I dont know what wires to check and where. I have several mechanic freinds and i have been talking to them as well and they figure it is the PCM since i have pretty much changed everything else. I know that the list you give me will help me I just dont know where all that is sorry. I am pretty good with engines I can build them but wirring not so much. Can I get a wire diagram that is EZ to read for dummies:lol: that will show me all that??

For wiring Diagrams you can try - - - - 1. Chiltons Manual OR 2. Haynes Manual. OR 3. Chrysler Service manual for your jeep -- OR 4. Try the Internet--- You should be able to FIND. Wiring Diagrams --- one of those sources. Electrical problems -- can BE some of the tougher problems to SOLVE! Good Luck ! JB
 

Yepper! I'm glad you got it going--too! That was a TOUGH ONE. Thanks for the Feed-back. On my Post of: 12-1. --- I mentioned the PCM could be the cause of this problem (Item # 5). Gentlemen: If we THINK about it -- In HINDSIGHT-- It amost had to be a Wiring Issue or a BAD PCM. The INTERMITTENT nature of this PROBLEM-- Almost dictated that it WOULD be ONE or the Other-- JB
