2004 Wrangler, 6 cyc. Auto trans.

Started normal this morning, after about 5 minutes of 25 MPH driving, came to a stop, then accelerated. It seamed sluggish, the check engine light began to flash. At 2800 RPM the engine surges, Jeep will not accelerate above +- 35 MPH.
Engine has a "ticking" sound (maybe a miss?)
Idles a bit rough now.

Suggestions please..........
Help.............

Yeah--- I will go with previous Poster on this one. You mentioned Check Engine Lite --- Might be a Good Idea to Pull ANY Engine Codes Off?? JB

The engine light flashing is telling you it is in limp mode. In limp mode the engine will run to allow you to get off the road. You will have no power and rpm's will be limited.
Being you have a 2004 you could turn the key on and off three times slowly(without starting the engine) and the error codes will display in the odometer. It will be followed by 'done'. Post up the codes so we could help you from there.

Here is a link to the list of code meanings.
Jeep OBDII Scan Codes

Flashing engine light is an catylist damaging code. Usually a miss fire. The only time a check engine light will flash is if it's catalyst damaging.

Thank you to all that posted.
I limped into Advanced Auto, they hooked up the code reader (free)
#1, #2, #4 cylinder miss fire detected as well as the #2 down stream 02 sensor??
Dumped in some STP gas treatment, installed some new spark plugs and all is well!!
My last two fill up's have been at a local Gate gas station. Apparently they are known to have poor quality fuels. News to me!!!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR.............

Glad to hear you got it all Straightened Out! I have always thought that a Flashing Check Engine Lite is like a: P300 Code --- Multiple Misfires! I would wager the Codes Came UP in the - - 300's? Think of the CEL like a Traffic Signal: State 1 -- No Check Eng. Lite at ALL --- You have the GREEN Lite! State 2 -- Solid Check Eng Lite -- Caution--- Like a Yellow Lite -- Get it checked soon. State 3 -- Flashing Check Eng Lite -- This is a RED Lite-- Major Malfunction-- Stop Driving Vehicle -- Get it Checked OUT--- A.S.A.P. !! Chrysler Manual Says: CATASTROPHIC. FAILURE. (Flashing CEL) And-- YOU CAN DAMAGE YOUR Catalytic Converter! (They Ain't Cheap!) NOTE: On another Board I Saw this One: Flashing CEL -- Abandon your Vehicle ; This is the -- SELF DESTRUCT Warning!! It's Funny Guys -- BUT, Not Far From the TRUTH! Comments? -- JB

when the motor went on our liberty, a few years back, we didn't get a check engine light at all. our would have needed the abandon vehicle light because of self destruct because that motor almost did

Good morning everyone and Happy New Year!
The Engine Warning light came on again last night. I went through the process outlined by JPNinPA, turning the ignition on and off three times slow. The code that was shown was PO158.
I searched and it says 2/2 02 Sensor shorted to voltage.
Can anyone explain what that means?
Thank you
Andrew

It is complaining that the 2nd O2 sensor is bad (or not hooked up). Check the wiring on it and and if it looks good replace it.

Post mini cat closest to the firewall. As mentioned check the wiring isn't fried and the connector is in place.

I hear many people have issues with Bosch O2 sensors. Some are fine. Never hear complaints with dealer ones. Check RockAuto.com for NTK that work and for the cheapest cost and availability.

PS what make and part # plugs did you put in?? This makes a big difference in the long run.

Had the flashing CEL a few years back on the way home from visiting family in Ohio. I was panicking but had to get home.....running like crap - horrible mileage - thinking I'm destroying my Jeep. Got it home and it turns out it was just a bad spark plug (4 banger - 3 out of 4 ain't good!!). Still got the same cat on it (165K miles), so I'm just sayin'..........flashing CEL is not necessarily catastrophic.

Yeah --- Your Point is taken. But, The Chrysler Manual still says: Catastrophic Damage. (Is Possible). Also, a FEW years back I drove a Car with a Flashing CEL--- And Managed to destroy the Catalytic Converters. This was NOT a Cheap Repair! I think it is better to--- ERR on the side of CAUTION. Thus, IF you do have a Flashing CEL -- It is better to ADDRESS it sooner than Later. The " SELF-DESTRUCT". Warning Light is ON. --- When you have a Flashing CEL! For Reference on this Topic -- Please Read : Jesters Post on this Thread dated: 12-31 (It says it all). Happy New Year -- JB

Well. I. Was just woindering IF the Gentlemen with the. O2 sensor problem ---- Got his problem all. Straightened out?? Update? --- JB

Jimbob2001 ~
Thanks for asking! I installed new plugs, dumped in some gas treatment and pressed on. The check engine light came on with a 0158 code. Indicating a down stream 02 sensor issue. BTW this jeep has CA emissions on it!! it has 4 02 sensors.
I ran that tank of fuel out of it and refilled it with Shell gas.
It seams to be running fine now. I think I just bought a load of bad gas and that is what started the process.
It has been a good lesson learned.
02 sensors, knock sensors etc. etc. who new??

Thank you to all that responded.

Additionally, if you go to the Auto Zone web page and set up an account (free) they have all the repair manuals available on the web. That was a big help identifying the correct 02 sensor on the system.
