If your in CA. would be an illegal install if the vehicle is regestered for on -road use. For off-road use only it's be ok. Anywhere else, you may be able to get away with the swap. It's gettin to be a popular swap, puttin in a chevy 350 into the wrangler's. It's not gonna be cheap, new motor mounts, adapters, wiring harness, to name a few things right off.
Theres a lot involved with the swap, and I' sure there are those out here that have done it that can tell you more.

Won't work if you are required to get your Emissions certified. Most emissions laws, maybe federal, require the engine to be the same year as the vehicle, or newer, and that all original emissions equipment be installed.

If you don't have testing, then do it, you just won't be able to sell the jeep to somebody that lives in an area with testing. I ran into this problem when selling my '88 YJ with 350. I'm rural and don't get tested. A very interested buyer lived in the city and couldn't buy it because he would be required to get it tested.

You'll need the transmission and transfer case along with the engine. The stock transmission won't handle the power, and the adapter for the transfer case is a waste of $$.

You will eventually need stronger axles, depending on how/where you drive the jeep. Stock axles will only hold up to light duty behind the 350. I did it with 3.07 gears in the stock axles, so it can be done.[addsig]

Just mod the hell out of the little 4Banger that could, it's:
  • Reliable
  • Easy to Maintain
  • Light weight
  • Easy on the drivetrain

I have a '95 2.5L and it's fun to drive with just a few simple power mods. It'll go just about anywhere the high HP dogs can go. You have to determine if the engine swap is worth the $$ and headache.[addsig]

I say if you can get the 72 Malibu with the engine keep it together and have some fun with a high HP car. I would keep your engine and mod other items[addsig]
