Newbie and I need help!

I have a 1999 Grand Cherokee, 2WD, V6 engine, thats about all I know about it (I'm clueless when it comes to cars) 140K miles. Since purchasing the Jeep, (my father law bought it in '01) the transmission has always slipped a little bit upon acceleration. Well, everything has been fine in it UNTIL I left a friends house the other day and it seems the car won't go out of 1st gear!! I can only get it up to about 25 MPH before the RPMs go sky high, then I have to let off because I'm scared the thing is just going to blow up. Aside from the slippage, there was no sign at all that anything was wrong. The car will go into reverse fine, and I even tried to go through 1st, 2nd then drive and nothing works!

I am taking it to be repaired this week but want to know what I'm in for when I go. Basically, I'm scared that whatever may be causing this might drain my savings. Can anyone give me a clue as to what could be causing this? Thanks so much!

What does the fluid look like? Is it low on fluid?

Hopefully it's just the converter or something else that doesn't require internal trans work, but you might have burned it up. The auto in my wifes 02 WJ has gone out twice in 60k miles. First time the front pump died and I burned it up, the second time it was just a servo. It was doing about the same thing yours is the second time it died.

Hey ENW, the exact same thing happened to my Dad's 99 Grand Cherokee. It was just sensor in the transmission. It cost him less than $200 to have it fixed. Hopefully it'll be the same on yours.
