Newbie thinkin bout my axel

I've read about a lot of YJ's stealing an 8.8 rear axel from a 95' or newer explorer. With a fairly easy swap, what are my immediate gains by doing so? I have a 2in body lift and talks of a spring over in the near future. Would I be jumping out of order to be thinking about doing this before the spring over? Spider-Man

do them both at the same time.

the 8.8 was originally a 1/2 ton axle that was used in the1/4 ton explorer application. it was also used in mustangs, crown vics, and similar lincolns and mercury's.

benefits are;
larger ring gear and pinion
disc brakes
larger 30 spline shafts

the only true down fall of this axle is that the tubes are only held into the diff by 3 rosett welds per side. I will not go into the process, but you should weld the tubes to the diff. some people also doa C clip eliminator kit, I don't see the need for it.

X2. And I would like to add that if you think this is a bolt on project, think again... It is not OVERLY complicated, but you WILL need to fabricate a bit (well, not really FABRICATE, but at least figure out how you will run the brake lines and weld the perches).

I have an 8.8 in the rear of my TJ. Haven't really had a chance to beat on it to much though.

Thanks guys. The major reason for wanting this change is the limited slip opportunities. The more I've researched the closer this project is to becoming a reality! No sense in waiting for the snow to melt
