I've posted here before complaining about how long it took to fire up my wrangler in the cold. I was absolutely convinced it had to do with that blasted Carter 2bbl model. I've heard nothing good about it. I rebuilt mine nonetheless. Afterall, it gave me problems when the idle pickup tubes were clogged, but I fixed that. After replacing an ignition switch and a relay it took about 200 - 300 turns of the key to spark it up in 10 - 20 degree F weather. Maybe low cylinder compression? I was running out of ideas. After all of the b.s. I went through, it turned out to be the SSI (Solid State Ignition) system, consisting of an MCU (Micro Computer Unit), an ingition control module and a distributor pickup coil. I couldn't believe it. The bloody thing started up cold in 7 degrees of weather with just 2 turns of the key. Over the last two weeks, it's been fantastic ever since. My advice; if you've got a similar ignition and fuel delivery system in your YJ, don't overlook the SSI. It could save you some headaches and more than a few bucks.
