Pinion leak

I haven't had any leaks from the rear end and went out to the garage this morning and found a spot approximately six inches square. It is coming from the pinion area. To fix this can I instal a new pinion bearing, seal etc? I am looking for a new rear end to get rid of the 20 but need this one to last a while longer. Thanks for any input/advice.

You don't need to replace the outer pinion bearing, just the seal.
With a torque wrench find the load on the pinion nut to remove it. A lot of shops say replacing a the pinion nut is a good idea here when your doing a seal replacement, R&R the pinion seal and re-torque the pinion nut +15 pounds. If using the old pinion nut use a red locktite on the threads.

Hey, Utah,

Off topic but if you are in Sun Lakes, do you ever make it over here to Las Cruces? You got a place if you do, and we can go on down to the border to the Coralittos Reach, to teach the desert a lesson if you make it over here.

Thank you in advance,

Robert

Ok, driveshaft disconnected, tires off the ground, e brake not engaged. I still can barely turn the tires, something is definitely wrong internally. Can anybody tell me what size the torx head is on an AMC 20? I will be removing the rear end tomorrow. Once I get the poking cover off I will get bolts with hex heads to replace the torx. Thanks

Alright, good news. Found a bad brake spring in the right rear drum, replaced the brake kit and now she rolls fine. Removed the old pinion seal and installed the new one, filled up with new oil and she seems to be back on the road. Thank you, To all who offered advice.

be VERY careful!! its always a good idea to replace the crush sleeve ANYTIME you remove the pinion nut and do anything due to the fact that you will NEVER get the exact same torque on it agan and you will crush it more or leave it lose, either way it changes the wear pattern on your ring and pinion and can cause ring and pinion failure prematurely!!!
