Plastic gas tank

Hi there,

Been having some fuel pump issues and after having it replaced 3 times (only paid for it once) I'm thinking about getting a new tank. After the 2nd pump failed the guys at the shop cleaned out the tank as best they could but suggested further cleaning. I've read the threads suggesting to replace rather than clean. The only problem is I'm having trouble locating a plastic 20 gallon tank for my 91 YJ 4 banger. I've seen plenty online that say they are for 87-90 YJ's but none for the 91-95's. Anyone out there know where I might find one, or should I just go for another steel tank.

Cheers.

I have a 93 YJ with a plastic fuel tank so I know they're out there. Why not just replace it with a larger fuel cell?

the 20 gallon tank and the 15 gallon tank are the same exact tank.. the 15 just has a tube restricting it from being filled all the way, you can shorten it or remove it to get all 20 gallons in there

The larger plastic tank began in either '91 or '92, I thought it was '91. If you have steel it's possible the tank is a leftover on the line and your jeep was an early '91.

Just find a used 20gal. from a '91-'95 YJ, and remember that the 15 and 20gal units in these models are the same, only the 15gal has an extended fill tube in the tank that is easily trimmed for 20gal capacity.

I think a neighbor of mine has a plastic 20gal from a '95 still, I can see how much he wants and I can ship it to you if you like.

My email is bountyhunter@sija.org if you're interested.

Actually, the tank that I have on there is plastic. I was mistaken before in thinking it was steel. They've cleaned it out again. It turns out that they were replacing only the fuel pump portion of the sending unit and everytime it was failing within a day of installation. They picked up an entire sending unit from a stealership and the pumps were actually different. So I think that they may have been shorting out. So now (when I get home tonight) I will have a cleaned out tank with a brand new sending unit, along with a new fuel filter. I hope this will be the end of my fuel system woes (at least for a while anyhow). I'll update after driving it.

It was "originally" 20 gallons when the guy bought it in 91, so I didn't have to do the mod. Although I helped my buddy mod his 95 YJ with the "15" gallon tank. Shop was closed when I got home so I'll pick her up in the AM and hopefully it will all be good.

I've heard that the TJ tank can me similarly modified. You probably have the 19gal, I've read of TJ owners not being able to put more than about 15 back in, I think the guage leaves quite a bit in the tank at empty. Go ahead and test that theory ;)

My 2004 rubi has also failed to let me pump 19 gallons into it. The most was just a hair over 17 gals and that was about 35 miles after the fuel light went on. One day I will cary a can of fuel and run her dry

Ok, I ran 'er down really far the other day, and pumped 16.4 into it. So, at least I finally made it past 15. What I'm wonderin' is........is the pick-up hose (or whatever it's called) in the bottom of the tank??? I really don't care what the gauge says, I can adapt to that. But if the hose is in the bottom, I should be able to suck 19 gals. out of there, right??

From the guy you see walkin' up the road with a gas can in his hand,
