propane conversion

I heard that a few people have done propane/ natural gas conversions on their jeep rigs and they were all non-street legal. so, is this even legal for a street jeep? and where can I get a kit?

my aunt used to have a truck she drove every day that had a big propane tank in the bed. I wouldnt think it would be illegal. Unless you live in California or somewhere like that where emissions laws are really strict. I dont know for sure though.

Bread trucks and some police cars run on LP so it's legal but seeing where you live (know that area all too well) you may want to check since you have emissions testing.

I think your gonna find out its not gonna be any cheper to run propane, had a pick up equipped with that set up ,did a little research and found out the price of propane usually follows the price of gas. And you well have about 20 percent less power, but it is much friendlier to the environment.

really 20% less power?? why? just because its propane?

and I found 2 kits if anyone else is interested,
Propane Conversion Kits : Available Kits gotpropa
Jasper 4x4 Rock Crawler Propane Alternate Fuel Conversion Kits

i should have known that jasper would have this, they are awesome with engines lol

that is what I was told by a university professor at James Madison University, and he had commented that it didnt make any sense for the price of it to follow the price of gasoline since they dont have to refine it as they do with gas, guess it's a money thing.

Have a hard time believing 20% loss since all the buggies in my neck of the woods run it and love it. Go to youtube and check out Wes Kean. He runs it and that buggy ain't lacking any power.

could depend on the engine. what is he running?

Rousch also makes a 50 state legal LPG swap for F150's.

I too find it hard to believe that propane has a 20% power loss... Maybe if you are taking a EFI motor and converting to LPG, there might be a power drop, but 20% seams really extreme.

Carbed motors really benefit from the conversion, the motor will run similar as a EFI motor (including upside down), will improve throttle response and will net more power since the mixxing hat offers a better fuel delivery than a carb, cheaper than EFI to convert.

You generally don't see propane on really high HP motors since you are limited to the amount of presure that can be delivered to the motor.

We got guys here running tunnel rams on big blocks running pane and there def isn't any power loss. As to Wes he runs a big block. There is someone on another local forum that sells kits and they are horsepower rated. So if you put a 300hp kit on a 300hp motor it works good but I guess if you put that same kit on a 500hp motor you'd get a loss.

I've been planning on doing a propane conversion on my 46 Plymouth. The Yale tow motor company ran Chrysler and Dodge flatheads for years. I aquired one and since it already had the LP set-up I thought why not. Hadn't worked on it since I got the Jeep. I had read somewhere online that it did work out to be cheaper to run. What I read may have been BS, can't say for sure till I try it. I will say this, I see the tow motors at work run a 10hr shift on a tank not much bigger than a grill tank. These are Chevy and Mazda 4 cyl engines. I know that I can get a grill tank refilled for $20 at walmart. I honestly don't think they'd run 10hrs strait on $20 or $30 worth of gas especially the way those guys run 'em. Also, the more volume you buy in propane the cheaper it is. You can shop around just like gas, maybe have a big tank set at your house. Oh and the kicker to it all, you get a big tax break for the swap. Seems like it was almost enough to pay for the swap but it's been well over a year since I checked on it. Like I said, I am gonna do this on my Plymouth. I'll post the results when I do it.
