Rainbow Coloured Fluid???

YJ Rear Tow Point?

What is this rainbow coloured fluid that has formed a nice puddle under my 00XJ? I left the firehall the other day when it was raining and there was a rainbow leading from my jeep to the nearest sewer drain. Upon closer inspection I see a wet spot on the engine block down the side. I can also smell a bit of a hot smell after a good drive. Any guesses to what it is?

More than likley it is engine oil. Petroleum based fluids will have a "rainbow" look when mixed with water. First, check the oil level and add if needed, then look on the engine for obvious leaks, oil filter gasket, oil pressure sending unit etc... Check with some of these guys for TSBs on your year model, you may find out something about your problem that others have already discovered. It's a little strange being only 4 years old and leaking oil already...... Good luck.

No joke! I thought it was anti freeze? The stain? on the engine would appear to be where the head joins the engine block, but why would there be anti freeze from there? It must be oil, I checked the oil level and it is normal, the engine coolant does seem to be a little over filled. Any other ideas? Why did you think I was joking, because its only 4 years old?

antifreeze can leak from there is it is a bad head gasket....

First, your head gasket can leak coolant and or oil both. Antifreeze does not make the distinct colors you were speaking of unless mixed with oil. Second, I have not seen too many oil leaks on 4 year old trucks, although that is just my personal observation. I am sure many may have had differenct experiances. That is why I would check with the dealer or some other souce for a TSB on that bad of a leak., who knows you may have a silent recall and get it fixed under warranty.

I will take it to the dealer tomorrow and will post to let you guys know what they said. Thanks for the help and suggestions.

It turns out that the valve cover gasket is leaking. The dealer ship wants close to $225 CND to have it fixed. I think I will look into fixing it myself.

You can get a valve cover gasket for just a few dollars, and it is very easy to change. There is no way it is worth $225. Let us know if you need any more help with it.
