Alright, I finally got a break from school so Sunday is the big day. I am finally heading back home and I will go find a new rear end from the bone yard. 8.8 from an explorer. Any last advice before I go in there.
I put an 8.8 in my TJ and love it, so I think it's a great swap. Here's some of the things I learned:
Don't put the brakes back together on the wrong side like I did (they should be on the rear of the axle).
If you're going to go with a lunchbox locker then look for an 8.8 with an open diff. I picked up an axle with an LSD and rebuilt the clutches for about $75.
Keep the breather / axle vent about where it is. I tried to move it to the abs hole, and the ring gear forced gear lube up and out the vent tube whenever I drove anywhere. I had to move it back.
Don't try to install the swaybar in the stock location. The 8.8's diff is larger and it will make contact. *this may not apply to your YJ, but did on my TJ.
hey terry. I have been busy and sadly didn't get to the build till tonight. 40 minutes in and the old dana is out. Tomorrow morning I am going to get the 8.8. question though, I noticed you bought a yoke adapter. I didn't think about that... SO is there any place that would sell that, say the zone or any store. Or is this a piece I would be forced to order online.
I found this when surfing the web. I can't verify it's accurate:
You can also get the adapter from a Ford Ranger in the junkyard. Measure the adapter across the joint to verify joint size. If it's 3-1/2" or so across the adapter then it's a 1310 size. If it's 4" or so across, it's a 1330 size.
If you end up buying online then I'd recommend east coast gear supply (link below). I'd also look into the brake line cables, and I'd pickup the $1.50 freeze plug so that you can remove the abs sensor. Ford 8.8 axle swap parts for Jeep TJ, YJ, and XJ
One thing that I forgot to mention earlier - you should weld the axle tubes before you install the axle. The only real weak spots with this axle is that the axle tubes are only pressed into the center diff. They can spin if you really get on it. It's common practice to weld the tubes to the diff.
I got the rear end but quick question. How am I supposed to connect. The shocks? My yj has mounts welded on. Would I have to cut them n re weld? Any advice
