Rebuilding a Carter BBD

I have a 1983 Jeep CJ7 and it has a Carter BBD on it. Apparently it has had some version of the Nutter bypass on it because it has what looks like JB weld in that hole in the back for the computer sensor. I have been having idle problems. I found the tip on here and cleaned the venturi out several times. It will last a day or a couple of weeks, but it always clogs back up. I am thinking that there is trash in the carb somewhere. I am planning on rebuilding the carb and replacing the fuel filters this weekend. Does anyone have any tips? I do have a Haynes manual which talks about rebuilding the carb. Is there any better source for instructions?[addsig]

If I remember correctly the rebuild kit comes with pretty good instructions. Just take your time, clean the parts thoroughly and reassemble according to the instructions. The 2BBL is much easier and forgiving than a 4BBL. Many more adjustments. Just have everything that you need ready and have a clean place to work. Good luck.

Best tip I can give you is to replace that POS with a Motorcraft carb, I think it's either the 2100 or 2150. It will run much better, and doesn't load up at severe angles.[addsig]

I would like to replace that carb, but money is a little tight right now. Maybe somewhere in the future I'll replace it, but right now I am going to try and keep it running on the Carter.[addsig]

Deerhunter, you and I are in the same boat.I am having my carter rebuilt this week.In the future I would like to convert my cj to fuel injection, but that reqires much dough.I replaced my fuel filters a couple weeks ago and it ran like a top, until the carter dtsrted acting up.I think that the problem with these cj's is the fact that it has so much smog crap all over the place.I think it causes loss of power and leaks.
