shrader valve stem?

I read the forum theads about changing over to R134a in my cherokee (89). I purchased the R134a quick connects. When I was getting ready to thread them on I noticed I did not have valve stems in either schrader valve from my R12 fittings. Is this normal? I woudl expect that my R134a will not activate the AC lines without them. Is this an easy item to purchase? Thanks for any help.

In case anyone else runs into this problem...schrader valves cost a little under $2. If they're missing, your AC charge will leak out. I still haven't figured out where mine went...and when? But apparently my auto parts place sells a bunch of them.

Just make sure you use A/C schrader valves...and not the ones for tires

I purchased some tire schrader valves at Pep Boys (I needed the valve core tool) and they had a red ring (seal). I purchased 2 AC schrader valves at a parts store and they had a black ring. I would expect that is how you tell the difference...red for tires and black for AC.

That sounds right, but I have never paid attention to the colors much. But now that you point it out, my spare ones are that way too
