T-18 trans questions

I know there were several different input shaft lengths on this trans. I'm guessing if you find one that came from behind a V-8 it would work in my CJ with the 304? It wouldn't matter if it came in a truck like a J20 or Ford truck right?

The short answer is no, just because a T18 lived behind a V8 does not mean it will fit in a CJ. Jeep used at least seven different shaft lengths. The CJ T18 version used a shaft that is just under 7-1/2” (7.42”), and most FSJ have a 5” plus adaptor between the front of the transmission and the bell housing. The Ford version of the T18 most used in a CJ has a shaft length of 6-1/2” and requires a special pilot bushing to make up the shorter length. Both Novak and Advanced Adaptors make them.

The other thing to consider is that not all low gearing is equal between the transmissions, some have a 1st gear of 4.02, the other and generally most coveted have a 1st gear of 6.32.

This should help:

Thanks for the info and links guys. If I run accross one at pull-a-part or anthor junkyard I'd hate to pay good money for something I can't use.
