The final solution to my cj problems

OK, my jeep is smogged and good for another 2 years. After I installed the smog stuff it ran ok, then got worse, and then it got to the point where it will just die if I let off the gas when it's in neutral. I replaced the fuel filter, installed all new vacuum lines, cleaned the carb venturies, installed a new cap+rotor+wires+msd blaster tfi coil, timed it, intalled a new battery, etc., etc.. It runs worse than ever before. As you can probably guess, I am a bit perplexed. Here is my grand plan: Gut it and bypass the cat so it won't get plugged up (have a cutout that goes to the cat and to the muffler, with flanges on the two ends after the cat and muffler, so I can force the exhaust through only one), and keep all the smog junk for when it needs to pass smog again. I would install a motorcraft, hei, 4.0l head, and who knows what else...maybe even an entire 4.0L down the road...just keep it as simple as possible. Is this realistic? or should I just keep trying to find and fix whatever is causing the problems? As for air pollution, the jeep is mainly a wheeler and occasionally sees the street.

Whoa! Where are you at? Thre is a reason for the question concerning your problem.

RE: CJ Tach Wiring

Well, I told one of my friends that I might be removing all the smog stuff (he's been telling me to ever since i got it smogged), and he was generous enough to give me a motorcraft 2100 carb that he replaced with a 4bbl on his 302 in his '67 mustang. It has 1.08 printed on the side and 15 printed on the bottom, looks like a rebuild and has a spacer with a pcv port on it, so I think all I need is an adapter, throttle linkage plate, and a choke (it looks like a heated choke; not sure how I would hook this up). I also have an hei that is ready to bolt in. It seems that all that is left to deal with is the exhaust cutout.

RE: Re: I just ordered a new top and was wondering

I wouldnt give up on it so easily. The 4.2 I mean. The carter I know for a fact is a piece of crap. I had to get mine rebuilt just to drive the thing. I still run it unfortunately but it's not as bad as I thought. You might want to go back and do more simple things like you did before. Even if it doesnt help, at least you know it's not what you just replaced.

RE: CJ Tach Wiring

I would say the carb is probably the culprit. Start there and see what happens before yo umodify your cat and exhaust. Those Motorcrafts are good carbs if you can find someone who really knows how to set one. A guy in B'ham did some tricks to one for my friend and it was the best running carb I have ever seen. It would run regardless of angle.
