throttle position sensor 1989 cherokee

I have a 1989 cherokee 4.0 laredo. My idle revs itself to 2500-3000 out of the clear blue sky. The parts store guy thinks its the throttle position sensor. At $95.00 for the part, I would love to get a second opinion. If anyone has had problems with the sensor and can shed some light on the situation, I would appreciate it. Thanks

A different question would be...why doesn't it rev wildly all the time if the sensor is bad? If its a vacuum leak...where do I connect the T to check it? I have the miti vac...and I was visually checking a few vacuum lines this morning. I would love to have one connection where I could install a T and check all vacuum. Does this connection exist? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.
