Transfer case question

I have a 97 grand cherokee with the NP 242J transfer case in it. I need to replace my transfer case and want to know what years are interchangable with mine.

Only transfer cases from a close year with the same engine and transmission type, others will most likely have a different input shaft. Should you get a 242 or 231 and the input shaft doesn't match, you can generally use your old input shaft, although it requires complete teardown and rebuild of the transfer case.
