Will a 242 transfer case fit in my 87 yj with a 4.2 I6 with automatic transmission.

Just depends on the input shaft length and spline count. The 242 would have to match the input of the 207 or 231 you're removing.
There might also be shift linkage differences as well as different driveshaft lengths when using the 242.
The 231 would be a more direct swap.
