Transmision swap

Have an 89 YJ, four-cylinder four-speed. Contemplating switching to a five-speed. Any considerations such as drive-shaft length and transfer case?

A 4spd never came in a YJ, how did you end up with one?

If by chance it's the AX4, an AX5 5spd is a direct swap.

might be a swapped in sm 420, they are a near bolt in to the 4 banger using an S10 bell housing.

do you have a really low geared 1st gear

1st is extremely low. So low I don't get across a stoplight without shifting low. Makes a 30 mile ome way commute a bit pricey. Love the rig, though.

someone swapped in a SM 420, 100 times better than the 5 speeds jeep used. I vote leave it. the only down side is no over drive so if you daily drive your jeep on the highway a lot, you will consume a lot of gas.

to answer your original question, yes you will have to modify your drive shafts to go back to a AX5 (I WOULDN'T THOUGH)
